Steppe Metal Powder produces copper, brass and bronze powders used to make gears, spark plugs, mobile phones and more. As Mongolia's first high-tech metal powder plant, it could open new industrial opportunities for the country, so SMP needed an M&E partner it could trust.

We were first contracted to design the plant's M&E systems. SMP then asked us to send our UK workforce to carry out the fit-out, and finally appointed Thomas Halliwell as principal contractor, with responsibility for project and site management.

We stayed accountable from design through testing, inspection and trial production, up to commissioning by the authorities. Our team trained SMP's local workforce in UK earthing practice and final testing, and found flexible ways to install critical dewatering equipment. All of this happened across a language barrier, in temperatures that fell to −45°C.

Scope of works
  • Full M&E design of plant and small power plant
  • Principal contractor and site management
  • Electrical earthing and final testing
  • Dewatering equipment installation
  • Workforce training
  • Commissioning with authorities

“A project as unique and complex as this demanded expert knowledge and creative thinking. It shows how our M&E excellence is counted on by so many people, even on the other side of the world.”
